fly in the face of

直訳だと「顔の前を飛ぶ」という意味で、もちろんそういう意味もあるのですが、この表現を見かけたのは次のような文章の一部でした

"... flew in the face of the conventional wisdom of the day ..."

この場合の

"the conventional wisdom of the day"

というのは「現在一般的に受け容れられている考え方」といった意味で「通念」と言い換えることも可能かもしれません。なお flew は fly の過去形です。

ともあれ

通念の顔の前を飛ぶ

では意味が通じません。

ということで、この意味は何かということなのですが ...

Cambridge Dictionary のサイトでみてみると

dictionary.cambridge.org

to completely oppose what seems sensible or normal

とあります。「まともあるいは正常にみえるものとは正反対に」という意味ということですね。同時に出ている例文は

This is an argument that seems to fly in the face of common sense.

この主張は、常識に真っ向から逆らっているように見える

というものでした。

よって上の

"... flew in the face of the conventional wisdom of the day ..."

という表現もやはり

現在の通念には真っ向から逆らって

といった意味になりそうです。

また fly in the face of と同じ意味の表現として

fly in the teeth of 

という表現も見かけました。この方が「歯向かう」感じが出ているとか?(笑)
